During the month of March Autoworld will be exhibiting some ten mythical Japanese sports car. In this light it is quite clearly apparent that the Japanese constructors, primarily known for their sound family cars, as from the '60s also opted to take on the European sports car manufacturers. In terms of volume they targeted the American market in the first instance.
The most renowned historic Japanese supercar is undoubtedly the Toyota 2000GT, a two-seater produced in limited numbers (351) between 1967 and 1970.
This model was revealed at the 1965 Tokyo Motor Show and was the immediate proof that Japan was in a position to produce sports cars able to compete with their European counterparts.
During the exhibition they will have the pleasure of introducing you to two Toyota 2000 GT: a coupé as also a Targa version, which was specially made for the James Bond film “You only live once” shot in Japan.
They will be in good company with a Toyota Supra, a model of the last generation dating back to 1995.
Nissan will be on hand with a modern GT-R and a 370Z Nismo, flanked by a Datsun 240Z Coupé from the '70s and a Fairlady convertible sporting a hardtop. The Nissan Fairlady Z is also known as the Samurai of the asphalt. This thanks to its numerous victories, be it in rallies (amongst others the East African Safari), as also on the track in the USA with the popular actor Paul Newman behind the wheel. The powerful GT-R was also destined for racing and is highly successful in the Japanese GT Championship. With a view to adding to their record of achievements both Nissan and Toyota are out to clinch victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which up until now was only achieved by Mazda.
Furthermore a Honda NSX from the '90s, at one time known as the Japanese Ferrari, which F1 driver Ayrton Senna drove, the first Lexus SC400 Coupé dating from 1993, a less known car in Europe, a Mazda RX-7 (former winner of the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps in 1981) and an extremely rare Mazda Cosmo Tri-Rotor.
We also just received confirmation for a Nissan Skyline from the '90s and a Subaru WRX STi.
There will also be no lack of scale models on view.
